New Ransomware Variant: Anabelle

A new and complex ransomware variant, known as Anabelle, has been discovered. In comparison to other ransomware, Anabelle is difficult to deal with as it terminates multiple security programs, disables Windows Defender, turns off the firewall, encrypts your files, tries to spread, prevents you from running a variety of programs, and overwrites the master boot record of the infected computer with a boot loader.

The complexity of this ransomware seems to be designed to showcase the skills of the developer, rather than demand ransomware payments. However, this does not mean that it cannot cause issues for you and your business. The good news is that the ransomware is based on an earlier ransomware Stupid Ransomware and can be easily decrypted.

Ransomware is a growing cyber security concern, which could affect any organisation at any time. By implementing strong cyber security practices you are able to mitigate the risks that ransomware brings. Examples of these include:

  • Vulnerability management and patching
  • Controlling removable media access
  • Education of employees
  • Backing up business critical data

Eventura advocate a process of prevent, detect, respond, recover. How this model could work for you depends on your business and risk appetite. However, Eventura are always happy to discuss your current solutions and how they can be improved. If you would like any advice on cyber security, please do not hesitate to contact us.
