Cyber-attack volume continues to rise

July 9, 2018

Eventura partner, SonicWALL, recently released a cyber-intelligence report based on statistics gathered from its customers and the wider marketplace throughout May 2018. This report showed that there has been a significant increase in the number of cyber-attacks, when statistics are compared with historic data from the previous year, regardless of attack method.

The report showed that in May 2018 alone, the average SonicWALL customer faced:

  • An attempted 2,302 malware attacks, presenting a 56% year-over-year increase;
  • An attempted 62 ransomware attacks, presenting a 69% year-over-year increase;
  • Almost 94 encrypted threats
  • Over 14 phishing attacks per day

Although these attacks were not necessarily successful, the sheer volume highlights that cyber-threats are not disappearing any time soon. In fact, they are one of the most prominent risks to UK businesses in the modern world.

So how can you protect your business?

In addition to installing robust hardware such as a SonicWALL, there are a number of steps that businesses can take to help protect themselves against cyber-attacks. Here are three of our favourites to help you get started.

Get the basics right

All businesses should ensure that basic cyber security measures such as a firewall, anti-virus, anti-malware and up-to-date patching are in place. The Cyber Essentials certification is a great place to start in implementing cyber security measures.

Educate Employees

This is a key element of any cyber security strategy, with many cyber criminals preying on the naivety of employees to steal information, transfer money or gain access to systems.

Stepping all employees through new-school security awareness training is an absolute must to protect your network. Users become your last line of defence and your essential, additional security layer: an effective human firewall. Also, by introducing a cyber-security training program, you incorporate security into the company culture and reduce the risks long-term.

Back it up

Backing up critical business data has multiple benefits, including the speedy recovery of such data in the event of a cyber-attack. This allows your business to continue operating and prevents a significant loss of revenue due to downtime. Although the implementation of a backup solution involves investment in hardware or services, the sum is likely to be much less than the cost of a cyber-attack, or other disaster.
